Katrina
Relief Fund-Raising Weekend By Trenton Q. Will |

WESTCHESTER
COUNTY, NY -- September 23, 2005 -- Starting this
weekend will not be the same as ones in the past. Yes,
hurricanes will be striking the Gulf Coast region and
our southern Americans will need our help. To that end,
the Westchester County Association of Fire Chiefs has
rallied every fire department in Westchester County to
participate in a Katrina Relief Fund-Raising Weekend.
This awe-inspiring feat was coordinated and implemented
in the course of one and a half weeks by Steve Surace,
former West Harrison Fire Chief, and his crew.
Surace is the President of the W.C.A.F.C.’s and called a
special meeting last Wednesday to see who and what could
be done to generate funds for the firefighters, ems and
their family members in the hurricane ravaged region.
Almost every department was represented according to
Surace. “The need is well-known and this was not a hard-
sell,” said Surace in a phone interview. “Everyone
seemed to be hoping that someone would put something
together, but didn’t know where to start. That’s why I
called the meeting. Then it just took off.”
Surace continued to explain that he had a core group of
people helping him. “I had help from past chiefs from
Elmsford, Port Chester, Purchase, Bedford, Verplanck,
just about everywhere,” Surace explained. “Other help
came from corporations throughout Westchester County.
It’s been amazing and a big relief that so many would
step up to help.”
Al Mignone, a former Chief from the Purchase Fire
Department, said he wasn’t surprised. “People have a
misconception of New Yorkers from tv and movies that
perpetuates a myth that we are cold, uncaring and
insensitive. That’s not the New York or the New Yorkers
that I know. After this is all said and done, everyone
will see that!”
What can you do? This weekend, every fire department in
Westchester County will be accepting monetary donations
to aid in the relief of victims of Hurricane Katrina.
This will be for the firefighters and ems personnel who
continue to serve whether they are from volunteer,
career, or combination departments. Many have sent their
families to safe areas and are continuing to provide
protection and help, even though they have no place to
live or stay!
Do the right thing this weekend. Go out, locate the
activity your fire department is doing to raise funds
for our fellow-Americans, and make a donation. All of
the proceeds will be used for the victims.
God bless those who are trying to recover from this and
God bless those trying to help them. |
